Cross motion, for solo multi-percussionist, explores the alternating and fast movement between a pitched percussion (marimba) and a set of unpitched percussion (3 tom-toms, 3 hand gongs [Chinese opera] and a floor drum [or surdo]). It is a short study piece that simultaneously focuses on the technical flexibility and the musical fluency between pitched and unpitched sounds, seeking a symbiosis between these two sonic worlds in an integrated musical narrative. With the most widespread possible access in mind, the range of the marimba has been limited to the four most common octaves and the set of unpitched percussions is intentionally non-specific as to dimensions of the instruments, providing that three clearly distinct pitches (low / medium / high) should be chosen, both for the tom-toms and for the hand gongs. Commissioned by the Drumming Percussion Group, this work is dedicated to Miquel Bernat.
