Luís Carvalho participates in the Ibero-American Academy of the Clarinet 2022, as clarinetist and composer. He teaches clarinet masterclass, plays in recital works by Brahms and of his own authorship, and also integrates the jury of the IIº Ibero-American Clarinet Competition, in which his work 4 Inventions (version for clarinet and piano) is part of the mandatory program.

The work Mosaico, for orchestra, by Luís Carvalho, has been selected a finalist of the 1st Composition Prize Francisco Martins of the Orquestra Clássica do Centro. It will have it’s World premiere on November 17th, at 9:30 pm, in a concert to happen at the Great Hall of the Coimbra Conservatory of Music, conducted by José Eduardo Gomes.

ALBOQUE at international competition repertoire

ALBOQUE, for solo clarinet, by Luís Carvalho, at the repertoire list for the II APC International Clarinet Competition – Ed. José Avelino Canongia. This competition, to be held in Oporto – Portugal in mid-December, is organized by the Portuguese Clarinet Association [Associação Portuguesa do Clarinete].

Furthermore, the reportoire list for this competition also includes José Avelino Canongia‘s Clarinet Concerto No.1, for which Luís Carvalho prepared the accompaniment piano reduction and a modern critical revision of the solo clarinet part.

HORNPIPE in Madrid

Bernardo Silva (Oporto Symphony Orchestra principal horn) to present the Spanhish premiere of HORNPIPE, for solo horn, by Luís Carvalho.
This performance will take place at the Gala Concert of the I Congreso Internacional de Trompa Madrid 2016 (1st International Horn Congress in Madrid), on December 4, 2016, 3pm local time, at the Auditorio Tomás Luis de Victoria of the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid.

Furthermore, HORNPIPE will also be the compulsory work for the Senior category in horn of the 31st PJM [Prémio Jovens Músicos], the Portuguese Radio Broadcasting Corporation Nacional Competition for Young Musicians, to be held in Summer 2017.

July ends with two premieres

The month of July/2016 ends with two new premieres of works by Luís Carvalho.

On July 29, at Teatro Ribeiro Conceição (Lamego), the Portuguese Symphony Band, conducted by Francisco Ferreira, will present a programme exclusively devoted to contemporary Portuguese music written for Symphonic Band/Wind Orchestra, including works by Rui Rodrigues, Nelson Jesus, Fábio Cachão, and, by Luís Carvalho, the revised version in three movements of Chiaroscuro. This piece, originaly conceived in only two movements, derives from a comission of the Portuguese Symphony Band, who presented its World premiere in Casa da Música (Porto), on January/2016.

The following day, July 30, at Teatro Micaelense (Ponta Delgada/Azores), the Filarmónica Nossa Senhora das Neves (Banda da Relva), will present the World premiere of Gentios são os olhos negros… (Glosas sobre um tema popular açoriano), at whose concert the author (Luís Carvalho) will also conduct the group for this premiere. The remainder of the concert (also dedicated exclusively to Portuguese music for Wind Orchestra by composers Sara Ross, João Costa, Carlos Caires, Fábio Cachão, Lino Guerreiro and Carlos Marecos) will be conducted by Hélio Soares.

«Gentios são os olhos negros…» (Premiere)

Luís Carvalho‘s new work for Symphonic Wind Band, Gentios são os olhos negros… (Glosas sobre um tema popular açoriano), will be premiered next 30/July/2016, at Teatro Micaelense (Ponta Delgada/Azores), by the Filarmónica N. Sra. das Neves (Banda da Relva).

This piece has been comissioned for the 150^th anniversary of Banda da Relva, one of the oldest in S. Miguel island [S. Michael], and is based upon a popular azorean melody known as «Olhos pretos».

CHIAROSCURO (premiere)

The Portuguese Symphonic Band [Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa], conducted by Francisco Ferreira, will give the World premiere of Chiaroscuro – two scketches for symphonic band, by Luís Carvalho, at Sala Suggia in Casa da Música (Porto/Portugal) next 24/January/2016, at 12pm.

This piece, comissioned by and dedicated to these performers, represents, in the words of the composer, «an eminently abstract work», albeit refering to «a Renaissance painting technique characterized by contrasts of light and shadow (the Italian word «chiaroscuro» meaning exactly bright [light] – dark [shadow])».

The week after, on the 31/January/2016 (6pm), the same performers will also give the work’s international premiere, presenting it at the Pazo da Cultura in Pontevedra – Spain.

July with 3 premieres in 3 countries

The month of July/2015 sees three premieres of works by Luís Carvalho, in three different countries.

On July 10, Portuguese saxophonist Luís Ribeiro will give the world premiere of COON-O-SAX, for solo Alto-saxophone, within the program of SaxOpen-2015, World Saxophone Congress (Strasbourg/France).

The following day, July 11, Luís Carvalho himself conducts the Viana do Castelo Professional School of Musica Symphony Orchestra, in the premiere of his own new version for symphony orchestra of «Arco-Íris», by Duarte Ferreira Pestana, one of the more outstanding works for wind band by a Portuguese composer.

Later on, on July 25, the Desconcertante Duo (Sérgio Neves, clarinet & Carisa Marcelino, accordion) will premiere FUNKY MINIATURE within the program of the World Clarinet Congress [ClarinetFest® 2015/Madrid], in Spain.

Previously, on July/23, and also within the program of the ClarinetFest® 2015/Madrid, Luís Carvalho will conduct his own Mozartiana with the University of Aveiro Clarinet Ensemble.

Presentation of “Fantastic Variations” in Caracas, Venezuela

Within the artistic season 2015 of the Venezuelan El Sistema, the Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Band, under music direction of Portuguese António Saiote, will play Fantastic Variations by Luís Carvalho. The concert will take place in Caracas, on the 25/January/2015, at the Sala Simón Bolívar del Centro Nacional de Acción Social por la Música.
